Our Research

The principal research focus of the group is the use Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance imaging (CMR) and Echocardiography (ECHO) as research tool to investigate mechanisms and effect of heart disease.

We perform CMR and ECHO in 3 broad research areas:

  • Heart Failure and Cardiomyopathy,
  • Novel Myocardial Ischemia Techniques
  • Assessment of Myocardial Protection.

CMR GUIDE (Cardiac Magnetic Resonance GUIDEd management of mild moderate Heart Failure)

Current heart failure guidelines recommend insertion of implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICD) for primary prevention of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in patients whose left ventricular ejection fraction is (LVEF) ≤ 35% on maximally t...

MiSaver – Cell-Based Therapy Following Acute Myocardial Infarction

MiSaver® (NCT06353958) is a cell-based therapy being investigated to support recovery of cardiac function following acute myocardial infarction, using allogeneic umbilical cord blood-derived stem cells.

PROTECT-MI – Preventing Reperfusion Injury After Heart Attack

PROTECT-MI (NCT07362446) is a Phase IIa trial testing whether Xolatryp™ can protect heart muscle from reperfusion injury in STEMI patients undergoing primary PCI, sponsored by Nyrada Pty Ltd.

AT-02 – Targeting Amyloid Deposits in Systemic Amyloidosis

AT-02 is being investigated as a targeted therapy to reduce existing amyloid deposits in patients with systemic amyloidosis, with a particular focus on cardiac involvement.

BOLD-SSc – 5-Year OS-CMR Follow-Up of Early Heart Involvement in Systemic Sclerosis

5--year OS-CMR follow-up tracking whether early right heart imaging markers predict outcomes in systemic sclerosis patients.

BRITISH – Using Cardiac MRI to Guide ICD Therapy

The BRITISH trial is investigating whether CMR-detected myocardial scar can more precisely identify patients with non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy who will benefit from an implantable defibrillator.

RADICAL-PC – Cardiovascular Risk in Men with Prostate Cancer

RADICAL-PC is examining cardiovascular risk in men with prostate cancer, particularly the effects of androgen deprivation therapy, and testing whether proactive risk-factor management can improve outcomes.

DIVULGE-2 – Predicting Delirium Vulnerability in Older Surgical Patients

DIVULGE-2 is investigating whether pre-surgery neurophysiological measures can predict which older adults are vulnerable to developing delirium after surgery.

MICRO MI – Investigating Coronary Microvascular Dysfunction in MINOCA

The MICRO MI study uses a novel, non-invasive cardiac MRI technique to detect coronary microvascular dysfunction in patients with heart attacks and non-obstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA).

Prognostic Utility of BOLD Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Chronic Kidney Disease

Cardiovascular disease is common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a major cause of death in CKD patients. However, early disease can be asymptomatic.

Pulmonary Hypertension Study

This research project is testing a new method of detecting pulmonary hypertension (high lung pressures) using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (sometimes called CMR) and dobutamine stress echocardiography (sometimes called DSE) . . .

ECHO SCAR: ECHOcardiographic Strain characteristic predictors of sudden CARdiac death

ECHO cardiographic S train characteristic predictors of sudden CAR diac death in mild to moderate Heart Failure (ECHO SCAR) Some patients with heart failure are at risk from sudden cardiac death due to a life threatening heart rhythm. This . . ...
