Cardiac Imaging Research SA

Our Research

The principal research focus of the group is the use Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance imaging as research tool to investigate mechanisms and effect of heart disease.

We do this in 3 broad research areas:

  • Heart Failure and Cardiomyopathy,
  • Novel Myocardial Ischemia Techniques and
  • Assessment of Myocardial Protection.

CMR GUIDE HF (Cardiac Magnetic Resonance GUIDEd management of mild moderate Heart Failure)

Current heart failure guidelines recommend insertion of implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICD) for primary prevention of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in patients whose left ventricular ejection fraction is (LVEF) ≤ 35% on maximally tolerated medical therapy. However, the majority of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in patients with heart failure occurs ...

Prognostic Utility of BOLD Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Chronic Kidney Disease

Cardiovascular disease is common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a major cause of death in CKD patients. However, early disease can be asymptomatic. This makes it important to investigate and diagnose the condition early. There are several available functional testing methods for ...

Pulmonary Hypertension Study

This research project is testing a new method of detecting pulmonary hypertension (high lung pressures) using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (sometimes called CMR) and dobutamine stress echocardiography (sometimes called DSE). Pulmonary hypertension is difficult to detect in the early stages of the disease. Pulmonary hypertension can affect and cause ...

ECHO SCAR: ECHOcardiographic Strain characteristic predictors of sudden CARdiac death

ECHOcardiographic Strain characteristic predictors of sudden CARdiac death in mild to moderate Heart Failure (ECHO SCAR) Some patients with heart failure are at risk from sudden cardiac death due to a life threatening heart rhythm. This occurs most often in those patients that have only a ...

Echocardiographic strain and mechanical dispersion for prediction of sudden cardiac death

Echocardiographic strain and mechanical dispersion for prediction of sudden cardiac death and malignant ventricular arrhythmias.   Our prediction tools for working out who is a risk from sudden cardiac death are limited, particularly in patients with only a small amount of heart damage. Using a new technology ...

Identification of Atypical Fabry’s Disease in a Cardiac Population

Fabry’s Disease is a rare genetic disorder that affects many organ systems in the body including the kidneys, skin and the heart. The defect is due to a deficiency of an enzyme, which then leads to the accumulation of a sphingolipid (a type of lipid or fat) in various ...

Chemotherapy Related Heart Effects

We have been actively conducting research in chemotherapy related heart effects. Our work has been in breast cancer patients. Based on the breast cancer, oncologist recommend a specific chemotherapy. While still very rare, important cardiovascular complications, such as heart failure, of the treatment may be noticed.   ...

Statin Therapy in Ischaemia Reperfusion in Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting STIR

After prolonged ischaemia, there are reversibly damaged but viable cells that are further injured when blood flow is quickly restored to the heart. This phenomenon is called ischaemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). Evidence is mounting for statins, a family of drugs normally used to lower cholesterol, in terms of anti-inflammation, antioxidant ...
